Large Sienese Polychrome Wooden Sculpture Depicting A Biblical Female Figure, Circa 1500

An important polychrome wooden sculpture created in Siena between the late 15th and early 16th centuries, depicting a female biblical figure.

The figure, of monumental size, is depicted standing upright, draped in a long robe characterized by deep folds and a wide cloak. The original polychrome paint, dominated by shades of gold, red, and green, emphasizes the richness of the garments and lends the work a particularly solemn presence.

The delicacy of the facial features, the balance of the composition, and the intricate rendering of the drapery attest to the refined style of Italian religious sculpture between the late 15th century and the early Renaissance.

Standing 160 cm tall, the work is an important example of Sienese religious sculpture from the turn of the 15th and 16th centuries.

The pedestal visible in the photograph is a later addition, unrelated to the work, and is not part of the sculpture.
