Wall-mounted Console Made Of Rouen Earthenware, 19th Century

Renaissance-inspired wall-mounted console table in polychrome earthenware, decorated with a satyr’s head in high relief, volutes, floral motifs, a seashell, and a small wooded landscape.

An apocryphal inscription reading “faict a Rouen 1647,” accompanied by a fleur-de-lis on the reverse, echoes the older 17th-century inscriptions.

As early as the 16th century, Rouen was an important center for the production of majolica and decorative earthenware. Having undergone significant development throughout the Renaissance, it reached its golden age in the 17th and early 18th centuries. It is characterized by elaborate, richly polychromatic designs that evolved in step with changing artistic trends. Production was highly varied, ranging from tableware to utilitarian objects, including busts, church ornaments, mantelpieces, consoles, and more.. After experiencing a decline beginning in the late 18th century, the workshops gradually closed their doors, but pieces inspired by older models continued to be produced until the mid-19th century.
