Pair Of Majolica Water Jugs, Savona, 17th Century

A rare and important pair of Ligurian majolica hydriae, made in Savona in the 17th century, likely to commemorate an aristocratic wedding or a union between two families. In fact, the central body of each vase features an elegant bipartite heraldic coat of arms, surmounted by a crest and mantling, depicting the emblems of the two families united by marriage.

The form recalls the classical hydria model, reinterpreted in the Ligurian Baroque style, with spectacular, sculpted handles shaped like lion heads and applied masks on the body. The decoration, painted in monochrome blue on a white glaze, is typical of the finest Savona pottery of the 17th century and stands out for the elegance of its lines and the quality of its execution.

Works of this kind were intended for noble residences as celebratory and decorative elements, representing the prestige and heraldic identity of the commissioning families.

Condition: excellent state of preservation, with slight wear and minimal chipping consistent with its age.
