Casteldurante Majolica Apothecary Jug, 16th Century
An important polychrome majolica apothecary jug made in Casteldurante in the 16th century.
The piece features a globular body set on a flared circular foot, with an elongated neck and a vertical handle. The decoration, predominantly in shades of blue and yellow on a light background, consists of elegant plant motifs and scrollwork framing a wide band bearing a pharmaceutical inscription. The handle is also embellished with a painted emblem.
In terms of shape, decoration, and function, the jug offers an interesting insight into the production of pharmaceutical majolica in Casteldurante, one of the leading Italian ceramic centers of the Renaissance.
Condition: the spout has been restored.
