Majolica Pharmacy Jar, Deruta, Calligraphic Period, Late 16th – Early 17th Century

An important Deruta majolica apothecary jar, dating from the late 16th to the early 17th century, belonging to the famous “calligraphic” period. The decoration, executed in a refined monochrome blue on a white background, features rich ornamentation with plant clusters, mythical animals, and a central anthropomorphic figure—elements typical of Deruta production from this period. The central cartouche bears the pharmaceutical inscription “Ol. Sol.,” likely referring to an oily preparation, in accordance with the practices of ancient apothecaries.

The neck is embellished with a band of stylized calligraphic motifs, while the molded foot imparts balance and elegance to the piece as a whole. The quality of the painting and the complexity of the decoration make it a significant example of late-Renaissance Umbrian majolica.

Condition: excellent state of preservation, with slight wear and minimal chipping along the rim, consistent with the period.
