Pair Of Savona Majolica Apothecary Jars, Calligraphic Period, 16th Century

An important pair of 16th-century Savona majolica apothecary jars, dating from the famous calligraphic period.

Made of tin-glazed majolica and decorated in monochrome blue on a white background, they feature the typical ornamental repertoire of Ligurian Renaissance production: elegant plant motifs, stylized architectural elements, mythical animals, and zoomorphic figures inspired by Eastern models popularized through Iznik ceramics.

Both vessels retain their hand-painted pharmaceutical inscriptions (“Sir. Lup.”) and are marked with the Crown mark, an element characteristic of Savona production.

This pair represents a rare example of Ligurian Renaissance majolica intended for use in ancient apothecaries, with a rich and perfectly balanced decoration that makes these vases particularly interesting from both a historical and a collector’s perspective.

In good condition, with normal signs of wear consistent with the period.
