Clock With Rooster Symbol Of Pride And Vigilance
ORDERING AND ADDITIONAL INFORMATION FROM OUR WEBSITE
This imposing Neoclassical-style mantel clock, dating from the Napoleon
III period, circa 1880, commands attention with its remarkable
decorative presence, the power of its sculptural composition and the
sumptuousness of its materials. It features a winged putto in
brown-patinated bronze, embracing a majestic, finely chased and gilded
rooster, whose lustre contrasts magnificently with the deep tones of
the figure. The rooster, an emblematic symbol of France, evokes
national pride, courage, vigilance and rebirth, its crow traditionally
heralding the return of light and the triumph of day over darkness.
Paired with the putto, a figure of innocence and grace, it lends this
composition a distinctive allegorical dimension, imbued with nobility
and poetry. The ensemble rests upon an elegant Carrara white marble
base, enhanced with finely chased gilt-bronze mounts, forming a
horological creation that is as prestigious as it is sculptural.
The composition is arranged around an architecturally structured case
with rectilinear lines, crowned by the sculptural group of the putto
and the rooster. The youthful figure, with full, rounded forms and an
expressive face framed by meticulously modelled curls, adopts an
animated pose: leaning slightly towards the bird, he supports it with
both arms in a gesture that is at once tender and protective. His
outstretched wings accentuate the movement of the scene, while the
proudly upright rooster displays its finely chased plumage with
remarkable attention to detail. The clock case features rich
ornamentation of foliate scrolls, botanical motifs and decorative
friezes, complemented by fluted uprights that emphasise its balanced
architecture. On the front, the large convex white enamel dial, adorned
with a delicate garland of polychrome flowers and Arabic numerals, is
framed by a beaded gilt-bronze bezel. Its openwork gilt hands provide
an additional touch of refinement. The Carrara marble base, with its
elegant projecting sections, is highlighted by a frieze of gilt beads
and rests on circular gilt-bronze feet, lending the entire composition
a particularly harmonious visual foundation.
Through its imposing scale, the quality of its sculpted decoration and
the particularly successful combination of patinated bronze, gilt
bronze and white marble, this clock is an exceptional choice for a
refined interior or a collection of antique horology. Its rich
iconography, dominated by the French rooster and the putto, gives it an
immediately recognisable identity, while the contrast between its
materials enhances every detail of its execution. Far more than an
instrument for measuring time, it asserts itself as a true decorative
sculpture, bearing witness to the taste for monumental compositions and
prestigious ornamental objects. Its expressive aesthetic, architectural
elegance and allegorical character make it a particularly captivating
piece, capable of becoming the focal point of a collection or
distinguished interior.
