Exceptional Renaissance medal in gilded bronze depicting “Diva Faustina,” attributed to Galeazzo Mondella, known as Moderno (Verona, 1467–1528), circa 1490.

Rare Italian Renaissance gilt bronze medal, featuring on the obverse a high-relief bust of Diva Faustina, with the circular Latin inscription DIVA FAVSTINA.

The particularly powerful sculptural treatment of the portrait, with its highly pronounced relief and design directly inspired by Roman antiquity, is characteristic of the art of the Veronese medalist Galeazzo Mondella, known as Moderno, one of the great creators of bronze medals and plaques of the Italian Renaissance. The medal is signed with Moderno’s “M” on the shield at the bottom of the reverse.

The reverse bears the legend SENATS POPIS (SENATVS POPVLVSQVE, “The Senate and the [Roman] People”), accompanying a triumphal composition known as the Senatorial Triumph.

This medal is particularly well documented in major international collections; it can be found, notably, at the National Gallery of Art in Washington (inv. 1942.9.175.a.) as well as at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York (inv. 2023.569.142).
