Set Of Two Medieval Parchments – Bellignat & Oyonnax (ain) – Dated Legal Document
A rare set of two medieval parchments on animal skin, of a generous size (approximately 60 x 50 cm each), written in Latin in brown ink in a regular Gothic cursive script.
These two documents form a coherent set relating to the same legal context in the Bugey region (Ain), involving the lords of Bellignat and the inhabitants of Oyonnax.
The second parchment, the more complete of the two, is a settlement dated September 8, 1418 (“8 7bre 1418”), resolving a dispute concerning rights of way and use along the banks of the Ain River. It is a formal legal document, detailing the proceedings, appeal, and agreement between the parties, intended to resolve disputes and permanently establish the conditions for exercising these rights.
The first parchment, slightly earlier or of a complementary nature, presents a deed of concession or confirmation of rights issued by a knight named Franciscus de Bellignin, a local lord, who may have been the originator of the rights or circumstances that gave rise to the subsequent dispute.
The collection thus constitutes a rare example of a feudal record relating to a local economic conflict (rights of way, traffic, land use) and its resolution in the early 15th century.
Includes standard diplomatic formulas (“In nomine Domini amen,” “universis presentes litteras inspecturis”), as well as signatures and initials of validation.
