Oracle Box With Mouse Baoule Ivory Coast
Here is an oracle box, a mouse box, from the BAOULES of the Ivory Coast
late 19th century early 20th century
decorated with a seated, bearded old man holding his beard. A head for the lid. Wood with crusty patina, glossy black, partly covered with metal
The diviner places a mouse in the box, which, frightened, disappears into the double font. The diviner then places flour and various small ritual objects in the box, closes the lid and speaks to the audience. The little animal then emerges from its hiding place, leaves its tracks in the flour, and moves a few small objects. The diviner opens the box and interprets the signs. Great art!
