Japanese Buddha Made Of Solid Bronze – 16th–17th Century
Japanese Buddha in solid bronze, dating from the 16th–17th centuries. This small devotional sculpture depicts the Buddha seated in meditation, in the tradition of Japanese Buddhist sculpture.
The hands are joined in the lap in the dhyana mudra. The robe wraps around the body, forming pronounced folds; the compact proportions and frontal composition give the figure a focused presence.
The solid casting gives the object a weight of approximately 700 grams and a height of 7.5 cm. The surface features a brown patina and pronounced signs of age. A mark is visible on the underside of the base and is shown in the photographs. The collection file mentions that the object was in The Hague around 1900.
Condition: significant historical wear and softening of the relief, with the patina preserved. No modern restoration is noted in the collection record.
Height: 7.5 cm. Width: 7 cm. Weight: approximately 700 g.
