Bronze Medicine Buddha – Sino-tibetan Tradition, 19th Century
Bronze Medicine Buddha, in the Sino-Tibetan tradition, dating from the 19th century. This sculpture depicts the Healing Buddha, Bhaisajyaguru, seated on a lotus pedestal. Its frontal composition and the design of the robe are in keeping with the tradition of Himalayan Buddhist bronzes.
The left hand rests in the lap and holds the vessel associated with medicine; the right hand extends downward toward the knee. The serene face, the hairstyle, and the treatment of the pedestal define this devotional image.
The work was cast in the lost-wax technique and finished by hand. The surface retains a brown patina, areas of oxidation, and faint traces of gilding along the edges of the robe and the pedestal. Details of the modeling and construction are visible in the photographs.
Condition: structurally stable, with age-related surface wear and preserved patina. The examination documented in the object’s file reveals no visible modern restoration.
Height: 38.5 cm. Width: 24.5 cm.
Weight: 5.3 kg.
