Nepalese Bronze Buddha – Newar Tradition, 17th–18th Century

Bronze Buddha from Nepal, in the Newar tradition, dating from the 17th–18th centuries. This Himalayan figure sits on a lotus pedestal and retains traces of ancient gilding in the protected areas of the sculpture.

The raised right hand forms the vitarka mudra, the gesture of teaching. The left hand rests in the lap. The lines of the robe and the ornaments on the base complement the frontal composition; geometric motifs appear on the hand and foot.

The sculpture was cast in the hollow technique using the lost-wax method and then finished by hand. The examination documented in the file notes an irregular inner surface, old oxidation, and mineral deposits.

Condition: natural patina, surface and gilding wear; traces of gilding in the recesses. No evidence of modern restoration was noted in the examined areas.
