Wooden Hindu Temple Panel – Shiva Nataraja, South India, Circa 1900
An architectural panel in high relief depicting Shiva Nataraja performing the Ananda Tandava, the cosmic dance, from Tamil Nadu in southern India and dated to around 1900. Carved from a single slab of solid hardwood, it depicts Shiva in a ritual composition intended for use in the architecture of a Hindu temple. The attributes and gestures follow the iconography of the dancing Shiva. The original surface shows a patina, wear, and losses consistent with its age.
