Four-armed Avalokiteshvara In Gilded Bronze – Nepal, 17th Century
A four-armed Avalokiteshvara (Lokeshvara), made of bronze with fire-gilding, from Nepal and dating from the 17th century. This standing figure is part of the Newar Buddhist sculptural tradition of the Kathmandu Valley.
The Bodhisattva of Compassion is depicted with four arms, a tall crown, and a small seated Buddha in the crown’s finial, indicating his affiliation with the lineage of Amitabha. The elongated posture and iconography are characteristic of the representation of Avalokiteshvara.
The bronze retains significant traces of its fire-gilding. The surface features an antique patina, green and blue coppery oxidation, abrasions, and accretions in the recesses. The base retains an original wooden cover plate, with material loss and age-related deterioration. The condition is that of an antique object, with wear on the gilding, patina, and localized oxidation; no cosmetic restoration is reported.
