Bronze Mañjuśrī – Nepal, Kathmandu Valley, 19th Century, 57 Cm
This large figure of Mañjuśrī, the Bodhisattva of Wisdom, belongs to the tradition of bronze sculpture from the Kathmandu Valley in Nepal. Dating from the 19th century, it measures 57 cm in height and weighs 10.1 kg. Its composition features a tall crown, rich adornments, and an openwork lotus pedestal adorned with makaras and plant motifs.
The raised right arm wields the sword of wisdom, an attribute that cuts through ignorance. The left hand, brought in front of the chest, was connected to the lotus rising along the shoulder. The modeling and the craftsmanship of the ornaments give this depiction a particularly commanding presence.
The sculpture is made of bronze, a copper alloy, from elements cast separately and then assembled. The original joints remain visible. A dark brown patina covers the surface, with localized wear and traces of a surface with golden highlights.
Condition: The piece is offered as is, unrestored. The lotus on the left shoulder is partially preserved; its upper portion is missing. Some elements of the openwork decoration also show historical losses and signs of wear. These elements have deliberately not been reconstructed or restored. The detailed photographs allow you to appreciate these characteristics.
The piece has been examined by our team under a microscope and UV light. Our attribution to the Kathmandu Valley and our dating to the 19th century are based on our expert assessment.
