Balinese Gilded Wood Sculpture – Bali, Circa 1900
A ceremonial Balinese wood carving from Bali, Indonesia, dating from around 1900. The male figure is depicted in full face, with his hands joined in front of his chest in the sembah gesture of reverence. His crown, jewelry, elongated ornaments, and decorated costume indicate a figure of high status within the Balinese Hindu tradition.
The solid wood retains its original polychrome paint and traces of gold leaf. The sculpture has a weathered surface with wear, localized losses, and signs of use consistent with its age.
