Japanese Bronze Samurai – Meiji Period, 19th Century

Large bronze samurai figure, Japan, Meiji period, circa 1880–1900. Standing 92 cm tall and weighing 34.2 kg, it depicts a warrior in ceremonial kamishimo attire, with angular shoulders and a garment covered in relief patterns.

The figure is characterized by its expressive face and chonmage topknot. At the waist, the daisho holds the two swords—the katana and the wakizashi—whose hilts are meticulously detailed. The left hand is folded behind the back, palm open, a detail visible on the reverse side.

The traditional lost-wax casting technique is complemented by chiseling. Floral motifs, the lines of the garment, and the tomoe emblems punctuate the finely detailed relief of the surface. A chestnut-brown patina, with lighter shades on the protruding parts, highlights the sculpted form.

The surface shows the variations in patina and signs of wear visible in the photographs. Close-up views document the face, shoulders, swords, and the hand on the reverse; they form part of the condition report.
