Thai Bronze Buddha – Sukhothai Tradition, 15th Century
A Thai bronze Buddha in the Sukhothai tradition, dating from the 15th century and originating in Thailand. The figure is seated in padmasana in the bhumisparsha mudra, with the right hand touching the earth at the moment of Enlightenment. The removable flame atop the head complements the ushnisha and emphasizes the iconography of spiritual light.
The sculpture is a hollow bronze casting made using the traditional lost-wax technique. The surface retains an antique patina, mineral oxidation, and traces of internal sealing—elements associated with the object’s construction and ritual use. The proportions, the drapery of the robe, and the lotus-shaped base are characteristic of the Buddhist tradition of the Kingdom of Sukhothai.
Condition: antique patina, oxidation, and age-related wear from handling; the removable flame is preserved. No modern treatments are documented.
Height: 55 cm. Width: 37.5 cm. Weight: 10.6 kg.
Provenance: Thailand.
Reference / SKU: 160.
