Reclining Burmese Buddha Made Of Lacquered And Polychrome Teak – 19th Century

Reclining Buddha carved from teak, lacquered and polychromed, Burma (Myanmar), 19th century. The black lacquer on the flesh tones contrasts with the red of the robe and the remnants of old gilding. Measuring 102 cm in length, the sculpture belongs to the Burmese tradition of devotional wooden images.

The Buddha lies on his right side, his head supported by his hand. The posture evokes rest and parinirvana. The curls of the hair, the rhythmic folds of the robe, and the serene facial features give structure to this horizontal composition.

The teak is hand-carved and features a multi-layered finish. Traces of gilding remain in the recesses, on the face, and among the curls. Macrophotographs and microscopic images reveal a network of craquelure, signs of wear, and remnants of gilding. There are no stone or glass inlays. The specific regional workshop is not documented.

Good historical condition with natural wear, crazing, small areas of lacquer loss, variations in color, and areas where polychromy and gilding are missing. The underside also shows signs of age and use.
