Indian Bronze Buddha Ratnasambhava – Revival Of The Pala Style, 19th Century

This bronze Ratnasambhava Buddha, made of a copper alloy, was created in India in the 19th century as part of a revival of the Pala style. The figure is designed as a small shrine: it sits on a double lotus and a four-legged base, in front of an oval halo surmounted by a parasol.

The right hand, open and facing downward, forms the varada mudra, the gesture of generosity; the left hand rests in the lap, holding a small jewel-shaped attribute. The frontal composition, the symmetry, and the large background panel draw on an ancient East Indian stylistic tradition, reinterpreted in the 19th century.

A beaded border and an undulating frieze frame the halo. The openwork supports of the parasol, the lotus, and the plinth form a miniature architectural composition. The lower opening reveals the hollow cast base. The metal exhibits shades ranging from golden brown to dark brown, with orange-red deposits in the recesses.

In its original condition with wear, scratches, deposits, and pitting. Small losses and openings are visible on the halo, the lotus, the backplate, and the plinth; the feet and corners are also worn. These alterations are indicative of the piece’s condition and do not, on their own, constitute evidence of its date.
