Thai Bronze Buddha On A Pedestal – Rattanakosin, Early 19th Century

Bronze statue of Shakyamuni Buddha from Thailand, dating from the early 19th century, circa 1800–1840. This sculpture belongs to the Rattanakosin tradition and retains traces of its original gilding. The figure rests on a lotus seat, which in turn is raised on an openwork pedestal featuring floral decoration and carved legs.

Seated with legs crossed, the Buddha lowers his right hand toward the earth and rests his left hand in his lap. This gesture, called bhumisparsha mudra, evokes calling the Earth to witness at the moment of Enlightenment. The flame extending from the headdress and the lines of the robe complement the vertical silhouette.

The bronze was cast using a traditional casting technique. The modular construction is visible when the figure is separated from its base; the photographs also show the undersides of the sculpture and the pedestal.

Condition: surface wear, brown patina, and areas of oxidation, with traces of gilding. These signs of conservation and use are visible in the detailed photographs.
