Burmese Shakyamuni Buddha In Bronze On A Throne With Elephants – Shan Tradition, 19th Century

A large bronze sculpture of Shakyamuni Buddha, created in Burma (Myanmar) in the 19th century in the Burmese Shan tradition. Standing 118 cm tall, it is distinguished by its throne supported by elephants, which forms an integral part of the composition.

The Buddha is seated, his right hand pointing toward the earth in the Bhumisparsha mudra. This gesture evokes calling upon the earth as a witness at the moment of enlightenment. The elongated face, the finely textured hairstyle, and the tapered crown stand out against the slender body.

The bronze work combines the calm volumes of the figure with a richly modeled base. The elephants and rows of petals lend the base an architectural presence. The piece weighs 44 kg. The surface features a patina with green and brown hues, also visible in the details of the throne and the reverse side.
