Decorated Vase, Bronze, China, Qing Dynasty, 18th–19th Century.
A bulbous bronze vase with archaic decoration. Two handles in the form of stylised zoomorphic creatures are situated on either side of the neck.
The decorative band on the body depicts a distinctive, symmetrical mask of the mythical monster Taotie (characterised by large eyes and horn-like protrusions). The background of the decoration is filled with a dense geometric motif known as Leiwen (a pattern of clouds and thunder, resembling square meanders).
In the lower section, pointed-arch panels are filled with geometric patterns.
The vase is signed.
