Depiction of John the Evangelist, seated on a rock, gazing up at the sky. Dressed in a long, billowing robe, he holds a huge book and grasps an elongated quill. At his feet is an eagle, an attribute of the young evangelist.

François Théodore Gechter (1795-1844) - French sculptor, graduate of the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. He studied under Antoine Jean Gros and François Joseph Bosio. In 1824, he made his debut at the Salon, creating small costumed sculptures. In the 1840s, he founded his own foundry workshop and exhibited his works in numerous domestic and foreign galleries, including Paris, London, and Berlin. In 1837, he was awarded the Order of the Legion of Honour.
