The vases come from the ship Hon Can, which sank in 1690 off the coast of Vietnam. They were recovered in 1990-1991 and then sold a year later at Christie's. [source: Nyuen Dinh Chien, Ceramics of five shipwrecks off the coast of Viet Nam, Hanoi, 2008] .
The two vases are decorated with the same motifs but bear the signatures of different painters.

China, Qing dynasty, before 1690.
Underglaze painted porcelain with cobalt.
Dimensions: height: 35 cm, diameter: 13 cm.
Condition: one of the vases has fossilized growths resulting from contact with crustaceans on the seabed. Significant hoarding of the glaze on both vases.
