Dancing Ganesha In Bronze – Southeast Asia, 18th–19th Century
Dancing Ganesha in bronze, a ritual sculpture from Southeast Asia dating from the late 18th or early 19th century. The elephant-headed Hindu god is depicted in a dynamic, six-armed pose, holding his ritual attributes; this temple image is associated with protection, abundance, and the removal of obstacles.
The bronze retains traces of fire gilding in the protected areas. Microscopic examination reveals a layered patina consisting of reddish-brown cuprite, dark oxidation, and mineral deposits, as well as contact wear consistent with prolonged ritual use.
The lost-wax casting and hand-modeled details exhibit slight asymmetries and tool marks characteristic of artisanal production. The open underside shows ancient corrosion with no documented modern alterations or cosmetic repairs.
Bronze with traces of ancient gilding. Condition reflects use, with wear, oxidation, and loss of gilding consistent with its age and ritual use.
Height: 30 cm. Width: 16 cm. Weight: approximately 1.9 kg.
Provenance: Southeast Asia.
