Gilded Bronze Buddha From Ayutthaya – Thailand, 17th–early 18th Century
Bronze Buddha from Ayutthaya, originating in Thailand and dating from the 17th to the early 18th century. The figure is seated in virasana on a molded base, with the right hand in bhumisparsha mudra and the left hand resting in the lap. The composed facial expression, the regular rows of curls, and the flame-shaped ushnisha correspond to the characteristics of the late U-Thong C period.
The copper-rich bronze retains layers of gilding on a dark, lacquer-like background, with a brown patina, green copper corrosion, and ochre deposits. The underside preserves a significant portion of the original casting core. Old cracks, localized losses, deposits, and age-related wear are visible in the photographs.
