Standing Burmese Buddha Made Of Teak – Mandalay Tradition, 19th Century

A standing Burmese Buddha carved from teak, originating from Burma (Myanmar) and belonging to the Mandalay tradition, dating from the 19th century. The sculpture measures 162.5 cm high and 69 cm wide.

The right hand forms the varada mudra, while the left hand gathers the robe. The long ears, rounded ushnisha, and richly trimmed robe are characteristic of the Mandalay visual style. The teak retains layers of red and black lacquer, gilded metal elements, and inlays of colored glass and mirror.

A sealed official export label, dated 1988, is preserved; it documents the piece’s entry into the international market at that time but does not constitute evidence of the sculpture’s date of creation. The original circular base is preserved; the black square display pedestal is a later addition. Signs of age, lacquer loss, and localized loss of decorative elements are visible in the photographs.
