Burmese Buddha In The Mandalay Tradition – Lacquered Teak With Mirror Inlays, 19th Century

Burma, 19th century. Mandalay tradition.

Standing 162.5 cm tall, this large standing Buddha is distinguished by the contrast between its fair complexion and its red-and-black lacquered robe. Carved from teak, it features rich ornamentation combining gilded metal elements, colored glass, and mirror inlays.

The robe envelops the figure in broad folds, accented by decorative borders. The face, with its delicate features, elongated earlobes, and cranial protuberance, characterizes this depiction. The right hand is lowered in the gesture of giving, or varada mudra, while the left hand holds the robe. White polychrome is found on the hands and feet.

An export label dated 1988, accompanied by its seal, is preserved with the work. This indication documents its export, not its date of manufacture.

Condition: visible signs of age and wear on the lacquer, polychrome, metal ornaments, and inlays. The original circular base is preserved. The black square display base is a later addition. The photographs allow one to appreciate the details and condition of the various surfaces.
