Bronze bell cast using the lost-wax method. Very thick. Decorated with raised studs. The handle is formed by two extremely simplified dragons. This type of bell with this characteristic handle appeared very early in China and would endure for centuries; this style of handle is rare—a similar bell dated 1604 is preserved at the Hunan Provincial Museum. However, the date is incised and may have been added to a much older bell when it was donated to the Confucian temple in Hangzhou. Good condition, showing wear, with an excellent centuries-old patina; rings well. Height: approximately 25 cm. China, 16th century or earlier.
