Crowned Thai Buddha In Bronze – Rattanakosin Tradition, 19th Century

Crowned Thai Buddha in bronze, a Buddhist sculpture from the Rattanakosin tradition dating from the 19th century, originating in Thailand. The figure is depicted seated in the padmasana posture, with the right hand in the bhumisparsha mudra—the gesture of touching the earth and victory over Mara—while the left hand rests open in the lap. The tall crown, the tiered pectoral ornaments, the shoulder pieces, and the bracelets are characteristic of the iconography of the royal Buddha in Siamese art.

This heavy, hollow cast piece made of a copper alloy retains large remnants of earth and clay from the casting core beneath its open base. The irregular interior surfaces, ancient deposits, and the structure of the core attest to traditional craftsmanship. The surface exhibits a dark brown patina, casting irregularities, and localized wear consistent with its age and use.

The multi-tiered crown, earrings, shoulder ornaments, and floral pectoral chain are intricately crafted. The base features lotus motifs and openwork cartouches.

Condition: age-related wear, small indentations, scratches, and slight losses along the edges. The historical patina and preserved fragments of the core have not been removed.
