Peking Enamel Dish On Copper. China, Republican Period, Early 20th Century.
Peking enamel dish on copper. China, Republican period, early 20th century. Black enameled copper dish decorated with millefleurs in famille rose tones. Reverse in a "duck egg" sky blue. Beautiful gilding on the rim, probably mercury-gilded, slightly oxidized in places. The flowers are very well drawn. Cantonese Chinese work, circa 1900. On the front, there is only a small chip, which we have circled in white. On the reverse, there are very large enamel losses which, given their size and the absence of any impact marks, appear to be due to an initial firing defect; the enamel may have not adhered properly to the copper and quickly flakes off. Diameter: 208 mm.
