Vase With Crane And Shishi Couple, Japan, Edo Period, 17th-18th Century.
Zun" type vase: features a wide, flared pouring spout (neck), a narrowed neck and a rounded body resting on a low foot. The most characteristic features are the two handles sculpted in the shape of mythical creatures (shishi lion-dogs), which seem to climb up the neck of the vase. The neck of the vase is covered with a dense geometric pattern called leiwen (a "lightning bolt" or "diamond meander" motif), which refers to Chinese bronzes from the Bronze Age (Shang and Zhou dynasties). In the center, a crane (symbol of longevity) can be seen beneath a flowering tree (probably a plum or pine), along with other plant motifs. On the belly, an ornamental band imitating waves or stylized mountains can be seen.
