A Rare Inkwell From The Late 18th Century, Empire-consulate Period.

A magnificent inkwell, crafted from gilded chiseled bronze and patinated bronze, shaped like a boat with bows adorned with coiled serpents. 
These handles, which serve as grips, feature exquisitely fine engraving, as do the hull and each of the lids of the inkwells. 
The floor of the boat, adorned with four holes encircled by a ring delicately chiseled with striations, can hold an equal number of quills.
A beautiful allegory of Charon’s boat, the mythological ferryman who guides the souls of the dead across the Styx. The piece, in keeping with late 18th-century trends, features an Egyptian-inspired touch: the sacred boat, symbolizing the life, death, and resurrection of Osiris.


Period: between the Directory and the Empire, 1790–1800.
