François Rémond, Pair Of Candelabra, Late 18th Century. Directory-consulate Period.
Artist: François Rémond (1747-1812)
Magnificent pair of large candelabras in gilded and patinated bronze representing two vestals (priestesses of ancient Rome dedicated to Vesta, Roman goddess of the hearth, the house, and the family) on a base in red griotte marble.
Each of them, with a very beautiful carving, in bronze with a brown patina, holds in her hands an oblong amphora from which emerges a quartet of foliage.
Evolving in volutes, these are each decorated with a generous acanthus leaf and a vine branch.
Two form arms of light ending in a bobeche at the base decorated with gadroons.
The socket and the cup are decorated with striations.
The other two foliage rise above the head to meet under a crown of small vine leaves. This one accommodates a vase with rams' heads handles, from which emerges the third bobeche.
The two vestals, whose shape is identical to that of the candelabras in the Green Room of the Catherine Palace in St. Petersburg, also executed by François Rémond, rest on a high, square base, reminiscent of the aesthetic of a pedestal.
Made of red griotte marble, each of them has a gilt bronze podium at the top and a counter-plinth decorated with a fluted frieze in gilt bronze.
Some old restorations and slight wear in certain places. One of the two marble bases restored.
Work of rare quality, in its beautiful original gilding, attributed to the bronze maker François Rémond.

François Rémond (circa 1747-1812) Like Pierre Gouthière, he is one of the most important Parisian chaser-gilders and founders of the last third of the 18th century. He began his apprenticeship in 1763 and obtained his master's degree in 1774.
His talent immediately allowed him to build a rich clientele, including some prominent figures of the Court. But above all, François Rémond, through the merchant-mercier Dominique Daguerre, participated in the furnishing of most of the great collectors of the late 18th century by supplying clock cases, andirons, candelabras... always of very high quality of execution and with particularly refined and innovative compositions that made his reputation.
