Jacob Frères / Château De Bois-préau, Pair Of Consulate-era Chairs

A rare pair of Etruscan-style chairs in mahogany and mahogany veneer from the Consulate period.
The backrest, featuring a concave panel, is beautifully openwork and centered by a carved bar adorned with a stylized palmette with scrolls—a motif popular in the classical ornamental repertoire that was revived in the late 18th and very early 19th centuries.
The straight seat rests on a highly elegant base: Etruscan-style front and rear legs, reminiscent of the Klismos chairs of antiquity. 

Stamped JACOB FRÈRES RUE MESLÉE (1796–1803), this delightful pair of chairs comes from the “Jean Claude LE FUEL Collection,” belonging to one of the most prestigious collectors of furniture and objets d’art from the First Empire. 
One of the chairs still bears its label, attesting to its presence at the Château de Bois-Préau, which Joséphine de Beauharnais and Napoleon Bonaparte annexed to the Château de la Malmaison in the early 19th century. 

In superb condition, with a buff-polished finish executed to the highest standards.
Black horsehair upholstery with geometric patterns in excellent condition. 

Each chair is stamped “JACOB FRÈRES RUE MESLÉE,” legible when viewed at a low angle. This stamp was used between 1796 and 1803.
