Artist: Claude Galle
A beautiful pair of "Return from Egypt" candelabra from the Empire-Consulate period, made of gilded and chiseled bronze with fluted shafts and adorned with three full-length Egyptian female figures. The spherical candle holders are chased with Greek fret and palmette motifs. The round bases, with a fluted rim, are chased with waterleaf motifs.
In excellent condition, with its original gilding.
This beautiful candelabrum design is attributed to the bronze artist Claude Galle.
A drawing of this design is preserved at the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris. This drawing is taken from a presentation catalog of Claude Galle’s store.
This drawing is listed in the reference work: Hans Ottomeyer and Peter Pröschel, *Vergoldete Bronzen*, 1986, on page 326, figure 5.1.7.
A set of four similar candelabra can be found at the Château de Malmaison, placed in Empress Joséphine’s bedroom (AN, AJ/19/1144, f° 1 v°, no. 837). Returned to the Garde-meuble on December 31, 1878, as part of the set of four (Arch. Mob. nat., M250, f° 93 v°, no. 55811).
