Thomire, Breakthrough Delivering Andromeda, Monumental Empire Period Pendulum. 85 Cm

Artist: Pierre-philippe Thomire
THOMIRE, Percée liberating Andromeda, monumental clock from the Empire period. 85 cm

Spectacular clock, almost a meter high, in patinated bronze and gilded chiseled bronze illustrating one of the famous episodes of Ovid's Metamorphoses: Percée liberating Andromeda. We discover the two main characters at the crucial moment when Perseus arrives, deposited by Pegasus, on the rock to which Andromeda is chained.
The latter, showing extreme finesse of chiseling, are in bronze with a medal brown patina, certainly from the production of Pierre-Philippe Thomire.
This perfect quality of execution of the smallest details allows the spectator to feel the deep relief of Andromeda abandoning herself to a devoted Percée.
The whole rests on a large base highlighted by a large frieze of water leaves, acanthus leaves and olive scrolls in gilded bronze.
The two front feet take the form of the Kraken, a mythological sea monster, in order to perfect the representation.

Rare in its subject, its size, this very large clock is also rare in its quality of execution.
An identical clock, attributed to Pierre-Philippe Thomire, sold at Christie's 29.10.1993.

Very well preserved.
Beautiful thread movement, characteristic of the end of the 18th century, in perfect working order, revised by an art clockmaker.

The myth:
that of Cassiopeia, Queen of Ethiopia. The latter having proclaimed herself to be of a beauty superior to the Nereids, triggered their anger. They appeal to Poseidon who, to defend their honor, sent a sea monster to ravage the south of the country.
Only the sacrifice of Andromeda, daughter of Cassiopeia, can possibly stop it. Perseus, having fallen in love with the princess, offers her parents, King Cepheus and Queen Cassiopeia, to free her from the monster in exchange for her hand.
