Rare Inkwell From The End Of The 18th Century, Empire-consulate Period.

Magnificent inkwell, in gilded chiseled bronze and patinated bronze, in the form of a boat with prows in coils of snakes. The latter, serving as a grip, display a great finesse of chiseling, like the hull and each of the covers of the ink receptacles.
The floor of the boat, decorated with four holes circled by a delicately chiseled ring of striations, can accommodate as many feathers.
Beautiful allegory of the boat of Charon, mythological ferryman leading the souls of the deceased on the Styx. The whole, as was the trend at the end of the 18th century, with an Egyptian touch: the sacred boat, symbolizing life, death and the resurrection of Osiris.

Period: between the Directory and the Empire, 1790-1800.
