Very beautiful ink wash dated 1801, resuming the work of Jean Baptiste Regnault: The education of Achilles by the centaur Chiron. Very good quality of execution. Frame probably dating from the end of the XIXth century or the very beginning of the XXth century. The original work, produced in 1782, is kept in the Louvre Room 702 (Salle Daru).
A bit of Mythology:
Achilles is entrusted by his mother Thetis from an early age to Chiron, the centaur warrior. He educates him, teaches him to hunt, to become an emeritus rider. Then teaches him the art of weapons: sword, javelin, shield as well as unarmed combat. In addition to the arts of war, Chiron instilled in Achilles more peaceful arts such as music, herbal medicine and eloquence.
Achilles will go down in mythological history as the greatest warrior of all time.
