Drawing Attributed To François Verdier. Black Stone On Prepared Paper. Saint Mary The Egyptian
Artist: Attribué à François Verdier 1751- 1730.
Large blue prepared sheet presenting Saint Mary of Egypt, a hermit saint who lived in Palestine in the 3rd or 5th century AD. An anchorite, she lived for a long time in Palestine, in the desert, to make amends for her past sins.
Vigorous drawing, long, curly hair, tense, determined gaze, she wears a dress with a ragged bottom. She holds a cane in her hands, and the 3 loaves of bread attributed to her in classical iconography.
In the background, a pyramid and a palm tree on the left, on the right, the beginnings of a building, ruins or religious edifice, in reference to her conversion.
'Black stone, and a few highlights of white gouache.
The drawing is presented in a beautiful blue Marie Louise, in harmony with the background color of the work.
France, late 17th or early 18th century.
