Bon Sauvage Clock:
Pendulum au bon sauvage : "La nourrice africaine". Empire period.
Rare gilt bronze and brown patina Empire period clock known as "La nourrice Africaine".
The circular enamelled dial with Roman numerals and Bréguet-type hands in blued steel.
This one is enclosed in a case made entirely of finely chased and gilded bronze, inscribed in a bundle of sugar canes tied with a rope and supported by a woman with glass sulfide eyes, dressed in a loincloth and wearing a feather plume.
The latter, suspended from her neck, carries a bark in which a newborn baby slumbers.
The ensemble rests on an oval terrace embellished with an applique motif representing reeds centered on a shell.
Four spinning top feet complete the composition.
It was in the last decade of the 18th century and the first years of the following century that the first models of so-called "au sauvage" clocks appeared. They follow a philosophical trend developed in some great literary and historical works, notably Paul et Virginie by Bernardin de Saint-Pierre published in 1787 , Atala by Chateaubriand which and above all Daniel Defoe's novel published in 1719: Robinson Crusoe.
This clock, depicting a young African nursemaid carrying a newborn child, is among the most appreciated and sought-after models among antique clock enthusiasts.
Its composition is directly inspired by a drawing registered in 1807 by the bronze-maker Croutelle aîné, kept at the Bibliothèque Nationale de Paris, Cabinet des Estampes (see D. and C. Fléchon, "La pendule au nègre", Bulletin de l'Association nationale des Collectionneurs et Amateurs d'Horlogerie ancienne, Spring 1992, n°63, p.32, fig.4).
Very fine condition.
Original gilding and patina.
Movement overhauled by an art watchmaker, perfect working order.
Empire period.
