Jacob D Rue Meslée, A Pair Of Chairs Stamped From The Empire-consulate Period.
Artist: Jacob D Rue Meslée(georges Jacob Et Jacob Desmalter)
A rare pair of stamped mahogany chairs with open, openwork backs featuring a central rosette surrounded by eight rounded petals between two pairs of scroll-carved scrolls. The upper crossbar of the circular back is composed of a set of turned elements.
The front legs feature a double bulge, known as “Jacob legs,” while the rear legs are Etruscan-style, extending from the backrest.
Two similar models are preserved at the Mobilier National, listed in the Mobilier National’s supplementary inventory in April 1933, as part of a set of three located at the Ministry of the Interior, Hôtel de Beauvau, Place Beauvau, Paris 8th arrondissement. (Arch. Mob. nat., supplementary inventory of chairs, f° 125 v°, no. 891).
Transferred to the Mobilier National on May 24, 1951, by the Ministry of the Interior (Arch. Mob. nat., inventory of tapestries, vol. 7, f° 24 v°, no. 16746).
The other two chairs in the set have not been located since 1950; they likely left the Hôtel de Beauvau during the Occupation.
