Devotional Monstrance Reliquary, Spain, 19th Century

Reliquary monstrance made of blackened wood with stained horn marquetry imitating tortoiseshell.
19th-century Spanish work, with some parts likely dating from an earlier period.
Total height: 44 cm.

The monstrance consists of a rectangular, multi-tiered base on four ball-shaped feet, surmounted by a central turned wooden shaft. The molded frame, inlaid with stained horn, features a devotional image at its center (The Virgin of the Immaculate Conception, after a work by Bartolomé Esteban Murillo (1618–1682), painted in 1678).
The central image may have been added at a later date.

This object was used for private or communal veneration. Placed on an altar (whether at home or in a church), it was intended to display a relic (hidden behind the engraving or in a concealed compartment) or simply a holy image (an ex-voto or a souvenir from a pilgrimage).

Sold as is. Note: signs of wear, oxidation of metal parts, slight lifting of the marquetry. In its original condition.
