Grand Tour Bronze - Auguste De Prima Porta, Italy, 19th Century
A bronze statue with a brown patina from the Grand Tour depicting the Augustus of Prima Porta in the antique style.
Presented on a rectangular base in veined gray marble.
Late 19th century Italian work.
Total height: 25 cm.
Height of bronze alone: 22.5 cm.
This statuette is a 19th-century bronze reduction of the famous marble statue of the emperor Augustus, discovered in 1863 in Livia's Villa at Prima Porta, near Rome.
Augustus, the first emperor, is depicted as "Thoracatus" (general in cuirass), in the adlocutio pose, addressing his troops. At his feet, the little Cupid riding a dolphin recalls the divine ancestry claimed by the Julii (Venus) line.
These bronzes were purchased as luxury "souvenirs" from famous foundries (such as Chiurazzi or Sommer in Naples) as part of the Grand Tour. They enabled collectors to display their culture and taste for Antiquity back home, a way of asserting their erudition.
