Antique-style Bronze Lioness - 19th Century
Bronze figurine with a brown patina depicting a lioness reclining in the classical style on a rectangular pedestal.
Probably a 19th-century French or Italian piece.
Length: 8.5 cm. Width: 5 cm. Height: 6 cm.
Beautiful original brown patina.
This Antique-inspired piece is reminiscent of the small cabinet bronzes produced in Italy during the 16th and 17th centuries, which themselves drew on the styles of the Renaissance and Antiquity.
In the 19th century, the historicist and neoclassical movements revived these themes. Small bronzes were then produced for the libraries and offices of the bourgeoisie and the aristocracy, sometimes as part of the Grand Tour, to assert one’s taste for antiquity and the spirit of scholarship that accompanied it.
