Portrait Of A High-quality Lady From The Empire Period, 1805-1810
Artist: Atelier De François Gérard
A rare and delicate portrait of a lady of quality from the Empire period, circa 1805-1810.
The young woman is depicted in three-quarter profile, richly dressed in an Empire-waisted silk and muslin gown with transparent puffed sleeves adorned with gold silk ribbons and a red cashmere shawl with embroidered edging. Her face is richly adorned with a tiara holding back a curly hairstyle known as “à la Grecque” and pearl and diamond earrings. A ring on her ring finger suggests that the young woman is married.
The model is depicted against a remarkable twilight background, rare for this period.
It could be a work by Baron François Gérard (First Painter to the King and one of the leading artists of the Empire period) or one of his followers.
There are strong similarities between this portrait, whose author and model are unknown, and major works from the period held in the most prestigious collections:
- Bust portrait of Alexandrine-Anne de la Pallu, Marquise de Flers, by François Gérard (Musée Carnavalet).
- Portrait of a Young Woman by François Gérard (private collection).
- Portrait of Madame Desportes by René Théodore Berthon (Musée de Tessé).
Dimensions: 65.5 x 54 cm.
(Restorations, old relining)
