Virgin And Child Gilded Silver
Virgin and Child enthroned with saints
Through a clever play on perspective, the Virgin, seated on the throne, is slightly set back from the four standing saints. On the left is Saint Vital of Verona, dressed in splendid Roman armor. His right hand rests on his crested helmet; his shield, on which his sword rests, is also visible. Behind him stands Bishop Nicholas, who with his left hand offers the Virgin the golden spheres intended for the three young women about to be married. On the other side, a finely sculpted nude, his back scarred by arrows, is Saint Sebastian, his arms still bound behind his back. Behind him stands Saint Anthony the Abbot, holding his crozier and the traditional piglet. The Virgin wears a rich, close-fitting gown. A mantle covers her knees, from which the Infant Jesus seems to slide, perhaps wishing to join Saint John the Baptist, kneeling at her feet. On the pedestal of the Virgin's seat are two cupids and two roosters, while the center of the pedestal depicts a pagan sacrifice: a bull leads the way to the altar. Behind the Madonna, divided into two horizontal sections, is the décor adorned with tiny Renaissance bas-reliefs inspired by Roman stucco art.
After the Mantua school. Gilded silver
