Solid silver and vermeil chalice – A.E. Jones – Birmingham, 1940
English chalice made of 925/1000 sterling silver, crafted by silversmith Albert Edward Jones (A.E. Jones), a renowned figure in British silversmithing associated with the Arts & Crafts movement.
Description
The chalice features a simple and balanced design: a wide, flared bowl with a gold-plated (vermeil) interior, resting on a stem with a flattened knot and a wide, slightly domed circular base. A finely engraved cross on the base underscores its liturgical purpose.
The reverse side of the base bears a series of perfectly legible British hallmarks:
A.E.J.: master’s mark of Albert Edward Jones
Anchor: Birmingham Hallmark Office
Passing lion: Sterling silver, 925/1000 fineness
Letter-date: hallmark corresponding to the year 1940
A high-quality piece of English religious silverware, notable both for the reputation of its silversmith and the simplicity of its design.
